Route One financed and produced the six-episode mockumentary TV series from the mind of comedic tour-de-force Gabriel Sunday. Dope State is a dreamy, absurd love letter to pot culture, chronicling the modern day pot gold rush. From stoner celebrities to politicians and corrupt cops, a marijuana journalist named Tyler Gopnik documents the daily life of producers, distributors, and consumers in the California weed industry. We witness the downfall of the old school “mom and pop” marijuana gardens and the rise of Silicon Valley-backed mega-grows. Startup entrepreneurs compete in the marketplace with products like THC lube, stoner apps, super strains, and Bluetooth enabled bongs. We meet the faces behind major political campaigns that smear or bolster a slew of legislation as well as the grassroots rebels who radicalize in the streets in support of legalization.

Route One partnered with Voltage Pictures to co-finance and produce the science-fiction fantasy Colossal, written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes; Open Windows). The film stars Academy Award-winning Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables; The Dark Knight Rises) and Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses; We’re the Millers).
Colossal is the story of Gloria (Hathaway), a troubled woman, who returns to her hometown after a breakup only to find that she, along with a childhood friend (Sudeikis), are linked to the motions of giant monsters attacking Seoul. To prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world. The film was released April 9, 2017 by NEON.

Teenage Ali discovers her dad's affair, her older sister Dana uncovers her own wild side, and their mother Pat grapples with the truth that she can't have it all, but her family can still have each other. For a generation raised on divorce and wall-to-wall carpeting, Landline is an honest comedy about what happens when sisters become friends and parents become humans. In theaters July 21, 2017.

Route One financed and co-produced Tallulah along with Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), Heather Rae (Frozen River) and Todd Traina.
Starring Academy Award-nominated Ellen Page (Juno, X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Emmy Award-winning Allison Janney (The Help, Juno), the movie is a dramatic comedy about a free-spirited drifter who gets in over her head with her first taste of motherhood. As the feature film debut of writer Sian Heder (Orange is the New Black), Tallulah had its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. The film was released in July 2016 on Netflix. ICM Partners and Good Universe represented the sale of the film.
Free State of Jones
Written and directed by Gary Ross, starring Matthew McConaughey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw
Route One co-financed Free State of Jones as part of a two-picture deal with the distributor STX, including Secret in their Eyes.
The project stars Academy Award-winning actor and international star Matthew McConaughey, with a script by director Gary Ross, who wrote and directed The Hunger Games (Ross has been nominated four times for Academy Awards for screenwriting, including the screenplays for Big and Seabiscuit). Scott Stuber (Ted, Safe House) and Jon Kilik (The Hunger Games, Babel) also produced.
The movie is an American Civil War epic based on actual events. McConaughey plays a renegade Confederate soldier who leads a ragtag group of runaway slaves and poor whites in a rearguard action against the Confederacy. They take control of three counties in Mississippi before they are forced back into the swamps. Free State of Jones is a story of heroism against the darkest odds and an important piece of American history - one that has never been told in film.
Free State of Jones was released in the United States by STX Entertainment in June 2016.
Secret in Their Eyes
Written and directed by Billy Ray, starring Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman
Route One co-financed Secret in their Eyes with STX, who distributed the film domestically. Written and directed by Billy Ray (who wrote The Hunger Games), the film is a classic crime thriller set in LA, and stars Academy Award winners Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman and Academy Award-nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The movie is based on the Argentine film that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010. The story revolves around an unresolved murder and the ex-FBI agent (Ejiofor) haunted by the killing who returns to Los Angeles ten years afterwards, certain he’s discovered the murderer. Mark Johnson (Rain Man, Bugsy, Breaking Bad) produced along with IM Global. The film was released nationwide in November 2015.
Directed by Drake Doremus and starring Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult and Guy Pearce
Route One joined forces with Ridley Scott’s company, Scott Free Productions, and Indian Paintbrush to finance and co-produce the romantic science fiction drama, Equals. The film was directed by Drake Doremus, who won the Grand Jury Award at Sundance in 2011 for his movie Like Crazy. Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Warm Bodies) starred along with Guy Pearce (LA Confidential).
The story takes place in a futuristic society where everyone has had their deepest feelings and emotions genetically deactivated to promote a more stable, violence-free culture. A portion of the population – including our star-crossed heroes – are immune to genetic manipulation which enables them to fall in love. The film made its world premiere in competition at the 2015 Venice Film Festival, its North American premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and premiered in the U.S. at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. The film was released on May 26, 2016 through DirecTV Cinema prior to opening on July 15, 2016.
A Walk in the Woods
Directed by Ken Kwapis and starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson
Route One partnered with Robert Redford’s Wildwood Enterprises to finance and co-produce A Walk in the Woods. The movie, a buddy comedy based on Bill Bryson’s critically acclaimed memoir, was directed by Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You), and stars Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson.
The film is about an aging travel writer who decides to hike the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail, accompanied by a long estranged high school buddy he’s been avoiding for years. Along the way, the duo face off with each other, Mother Nature and an eccentric assortment of characters as they reignite their friendship. The film had its world premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Broad Green Pictures launched the film theatrically in September 2015 in 2,000 theaters, and it became the second highest grossing film in the U.S. over the four-day Labor Day weekend.

Mr. Ubben is the Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of ValueAct Capital (investment partnership) which currently has over $19 billion under management. From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Ubben served as a managing partner at Blum Capital Partners. Prior to that, he spent eight years at Fidelity Management and Research. Mr. Ubben is currently a director at Willis Group Holdings, plc. Mr. Ubben has also been a director at Sara Lee and the Gartner Group, Inc.; CEO and Board Chairman of Martha Stewart Living/Omnimedia; and board member of Misys, plc. Mr. Ubben also has a significant minority stake in United Talent Agency (UTA). He serves as Chairman of the National Board of The Posse Foundation which provides critical assistance to college-bound inner-city students. He is on the Board of Trustees of Northwestern University and is a board member of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Most recently, Mr. Ubben has joined the Board of Directors at 21st Century Fox.
Mr. Ubben has a B.A. from Duke University and a M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Co-Founder & CEO
Mr. Levine is the co-founder and CEO of Route One Entertainment. He has been a media specialist, technologist and entrepreneur for over 25 years. Mr. Levine began his career as a screenwriter. From 1986 until 1994, Mr. Levine developed and wrote film and television projects for Warner Brothers, Disney, Universal Studios, Orion and CBS Television. In 1994, Mr. Levine founded Zoomedia, Inc., a pioneering Internet software and communications company in San Francisco. He served as its CEO for ten years and as Executive Chairman until 2013. From 2007-2008, Mr. Levine served as CEO of MediaOne, an independent television studio in San Francisco, which provides resources for global news outlets including MSNBC, CNBC and Fox News. Mr. Levine served as an executive producer on A Walk in the Woods, Equals, Secret in their Eyes and The Free State of Jones and as a producer on Tallulah, Colossal and Landline. He is also producing the upcoming thriller The Claim scripted by Damien Chazelle.
Mr. Levine is from Memphis, Tennessee and graduated from Carleton College with a B.A. in Asian History and Languages. He has lived in both Hong Kong and Japan and traveled extensively throughout Asia. He currently resides with his family in Los Angeles.
Todd Traina is a Partner/Producer at Route One. Mr. Traina has been producing films since he moved to Los Angeles in the '90's. He just wrapped his most recent film "I Hate Kids," starring Tom Everett Scott, Tituss Burgess and Marisa Tomei (which Traina created and co-wrote.). Mr Traina also is producing the TV/Digital series "Dope State" starring Gabriel Sunday.
Mr Traina's producing credits include "Tallulah,” starring Ellen Page and Allison Janney; “Ten Thousand Saints,” starring Asa Butterfield, Ethan Hawke, Emile Hirsch and Hailee Steinfeld; "What Maisie Knew" with Julianne Moore and Alexander Skarsgård; "Another Happy Day" starring Ezra Miller, Demi Moore, Kate Bosworth, Ellen Barkin, Thomas Hayden Church and Ellen Burstyn; "The Romantics" starring Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Candice Bergen, Adam Brody and Elijah Wood; and "Morning" starring Jeanne Tripplehorn, Laura Linney, Elliott Gould and Leland Orser. Traina also served as a producer on the feature films "Archie's Final Project," “Goats,” "What We Do Is Secret," "Stanley's Gig,” “Grace is Gone” and the popular documentary "Punk's Not Dead."
Many of Mr Traina's films have played or garnered awards at top film festivals including Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, Toronto and SXSW. In 2007, Traina was named a "Top Ten Producer to Watch" by Daily Variety.
In addition to film production, Mr. Traina is an entrepreneur, invests in and advises for various media-focused tech start-ups and develops real estate. He serves on several boards including SFFilm, where he has served as VP for many years and is a member of the Board of the International Tennis Hall of Fame as well as Vision of Hope, which serves and funds eight California inner city schools. Mr. Traina is a graduate of Connecticut College and was born and raised in San Francisco where he lives with his wife Katie and daughter Daisy.
Michael Alan Garcia
First-look Film and TV Producer
Michael Garcia is a first-look Film and TV Producer at Route One.
His company, Blackbees Television Company, has one series on Netflix and a Film and TV production deal with Route One Entertainment. Mr. Garcia has executive produced 175 episodes of cable and premium television series since 2012. Prior to starting his own company, he was the Chief Creative Officer for Televisa USA (NYSE:TV, Grupo Televisa is the largest media company in the Spanish-language world) and Vice President of Drama series at HBO Network. He is currently executive producing the series "One Day at a Time" with partner Norman Lear for Netflix.
In his position as Chief Creative Officer of Televisa USA, Mr. Garcia launched their US television studio and placed three series on the air in three years - "Devious Maids" on Lifetime, "Chasing Life" on ABC Family, and "Hollywood Heights" on Nickelodeon - all of which he Executive Produced. He was in charge of building and overseeing all creative operations for the newly-formed studio which produced, financed and distributed English language television series. In addition to these projects, he oversaw the joint venture between Televisa and Lionsgate TV to develop and produce programs for the US Hispanic market, and was part of Televisa International’s joint venture with Sony Pictures Television in Europe. He was named one of the 50 Most Influential People by Hispanic Business in 2014.
Prior to Televisa, Mr. Garcia spent seven years as a development and current programming executive at HBO. He joined HBO as Director of Drama series following the successful launches of "The Sopranos" and "Six Feet Under", both of which he covered as a current programming executive. After being promoted to Vice President of HBO Entertainment, he worked in development and current programming on such series as "The Wire", "Deadwood", "Carnivale", "Big Love", "True Blood", "Treme" and "Boardwalk Empire". In 2006, he received the Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Employee from Chairman/CEO Chris Albrecht.
Mr. Garcia's first executive job was as Director of Development at Industry Entertainment, a premiere talent management and production company, coming on board to start their television department. He began his career as an Executive Assistant at 20th Century Fox Television Studios.
Michael is a graduate of Yale University with a BA in Economics.
