  • PROJECTS

    Tallulah

    Written and directed by Sian Heder, starring Ellen Page and Allison Janney

     

    Route One is financing and co­-producing Tallulah along with Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) and Heather Rae (Frozen River).

    Starring Academy Award-nominated Ellen Page (Juno, X-­Men: Days of Future Past) and Emmy Award-winning Allison Janney (The Help, Juno), the movie is a dramatic comedy about a free­-spirited drifter who gets in over her head with her first taste of motherhood. It is the feature film debut of writer Sian Heder (Orange is the New Black), and it has been accepted in the Dramatic Competition at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. The target release date is Q2 2016.

    Equals

    Directed by Drake Doremus and starring Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult and Guy Pearce

     

    Route One has joined forces with Ridley Scott’s company, Scott Free Productions, and Indian Paintbrush to finance and co-produce the romantic science fiction drama, Equals. The film is directed by Drake Doremus, who won the Grand Jury Award at Sundance in 2011 for his movie Like Crazy. Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past, Warm Bodies) are starring along with Guy Pearce (LA Confidential).

     

    The story takes place in a futuristic society where everyone has had their deepest feelings and emotions genetically deactivated to promote a more stable, violence-free culture. A portion of the population – including our star-crossed heroes – are immune to genetic manipulation which enables them to fall in love. The film made its world premiere in competition at the 2015 Venice Film Festival, its North American premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and is set to premiere in the U.S. at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. The target release date is Q2 2016.

    Free State of Jones

    Written and directed by Gary Ross, starring Matthew McConaughey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw

     

    Route One is co-financing Free State of Jones as part of a two-picture deal with the distributor STX, who is also co-financing and distributing Secret in their Eyes.

     

    The project stars Academy Award-winning actor and international star Matthew McConaughey, with a script by director Gary Ross, who wrote and directed The Hunger Games (Ross has been nominated four times for Academy Awards for screenwriting, including the screenplays for Big and Seabiscuit). Scott Stuber (Ted, Safe House) and Jon Kilik (The Hunger Games, Babel) are also producing.

     

    The movie is an American Civil War epic based on actual events. McConaughey plays a renegade Confederate soldier who leads a ragtag group of runaway slaves and poor whites in a rearguard action against the Confederacy. They take control of three counties in Mississippi before they are forced back into the swamps. Free State of Jones is a story of heroism against the darkest odds and an important piece of American history - one that has never been told in film. The film is currently in post-production and has a target release date of Summer 2016.

    Colossal

    Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, starring Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis

     

    Route One partnered with Voltage Pictures to co-finance and produce the science-fiction fantasy Colossal, written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes; Open Windows). The film stars Academy Award-winning Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables; The Dark Knight Rises) and Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses; We’re the Millers).

     

    Colossal is the story of Gloria (Hathaway), a troubled woman, who returns to her hometown after a breakup only to find that she, along with a childhood friend (Sudeikis), are linked to the motions of giant monsters attacking Seoul. To prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world. Target release date is Q4 2016.

    A Walk in the Woods

    Directed by Ken Kwapis and starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson

     

    For its feature film debut, Route One partnered with Robert Redford’s Wildwood Enterprises to finance and co-produce A Walk in the Woods. The movie, a buddy comedy based on Bill Bryson’s critically acclaimed memoir, was directed by Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You), and stars Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson.

     

    The film is about an aging travel writer who decides to hike the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail, accompanied by a long estranged high school buddy he’s been avoiding for years. Along the way, the duo face off with each other, Mother Nature and an eccentric assortment of characters as they reignite their friendship. The film had its world premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Broad Green Pictures launched the film theatrically in September 2015 in 2,000 theaters, and it became the second highest grossing film in the U.S. over the four-day Labor Day weekend.

    Secret in Their Eyes

    Written and directed by Billy Ray, starring Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman

     

    Route One is co-financing Secret in their Eyes with STX, who will distribute the film domestically. Written and directed by Billy Ray (who wrote The Hunger Games), the film is a classic crime thriller set in LA, and stars Academy Award winners Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman and Academy Award-nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor.

     

    The movie is based on the Argentine film that won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010. The story revolves around an unresolved murder and the ex-FBI agent (Ejiofor) haunted by the killing who returns to Los Angeles ten years afterwards, certain he’s discovered the murderer. Mark Johnson (Rain Man, Bugsy, Breaking Bad) produced along with IM Global. The film was released nationwide in November 2015.

    Jeffrey W. Ubben

    Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board of Managers of Route One and Lead Investor in ROF I

     

    Mr. Ubben is the Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer of ValueAct Capital (investment partnership) which currently has over $19 billion under management. From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Ubben served as a managing partner at Blum Capital Partners. Prior to that, he spent eight years at Fidelity Management and Research. Mr. Ubben is currently a director at Willis Group Holdings, plc. Mr. Ubben has also been a director at Sara Lee and the Gartner Group, Inc.; CEO and Board Chairman of Martha Stewart Living/Omnimedia; and board member of Misys, plc. Mr. Ubben also has a significant minority stake in United Talent Agency (UTA). He serves as Chairman of the National Board of The Posse Foundation which provides critical assistance to college-bound inner-city students. He is on the Board of Trustees of Northwestern University and is a board member of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Most recently, Mr. Ubben has joined the Board of Directors at 21st Century Fox.

     

    Mr. Ubben has a B.A. from Duke University and a M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

     

    Russell Levine

    Co-Founder, CEO of Route One Entertainment, Managing Director of ROF I

     

    Mr. Levine is the co-founder and CEO of Route One Entertainment and acts as ROF I’s chief representative to the Union Global Fund. He has been a media specialist, technologist and entrepreneur for over 25 years. Mr. Levine began his career as a screenwriter. From 1986 until 1994, Mr. Levine developed and wrote film and television projects for Warner Brothers, Disney, Universal Studios, Orion and CBS Television. In 1994, Mr. Levine founded Zoomedia, Inc., a pioneering Internet software and communications company in San Francisco. He served as its CEO for ten years and as Executive Chairman until 2013. From 2007-2008, Mr. Levine served as CEO of MediaOne, an independent television studio in San Francisco, which provides resources for global news outlets including MSNBC, CNBC and Fox News. He is an Executive Producer on A Walk in the Woods, Equals, Secret in their Eyes and The Free State of Jones and is a Producer on Tallulah and Colossal.

     

    Mr. Levine is from Memphis, Tennessee and graduated from Carleton College with a B.A. in Asian History and Languages. He has lived in both Hong Kong and Japan and traveled extensively throughout Asia. He currently resides with his family in Los Angeles.

     

     

    Chris Lytton

    COO of Route One Entertainment

     

    Chris Lytton has been a top senior level operator and corporate officer in the independent film business for over 15 years. Prior to joining Route One, Mr. Lytton was the General Counsel and COO of the Film Group at Exclusive Media, where he financed and produced an average of five movies per year, including Ron Howard’s Rush; the upcoming Charlize Theron thriller Dark Places; the hit sequel to The Woman in Black, Angel of Death; and the new Jackie Chan action movie, Skiptrace. During his years with Exclusive, Mr. Lytton designed sophisticated financing structures and talent arrangements for film projects and provided ongoing oversight and management of the productions themselves.

    Mr. Lytton began his career as a lawyer, working as a litigator. He spent the next decade working in film and television production and international sales. He worked his way up at Morgan Creek Productions, with a run of major films released through its output deal at Warner Brothers and then Universal. After Morgan Creek, Mr. Lytton took a position as head of business and legal affairs at Beacon Pictures/Holding Pictures, where he helped manage an overall feature deal with Disney, a television deal with ABC Studios and launched a live stage show based on the hit movie franchise Bring it On.

     

    Mr. Lytton attended UCLA School of Theater Film and Television and graduated with honors. He received his J.D. from SMU, where he was a member of the law review journal and moot court team. Mr. Lytton currently lives in Los Angeles with his family.

     

     

    Sophia Dilley 

    Director of Development and Production

     

    Sophia Dilley is the Director of Development and Production for Film and Digital Media at ROE. Ms. Dilley grew up on film sets (her father is an award-winning production designer) and has a unique insight into both the creative and management side of filmmaking. Her career began in 2007, at Film 44, where she worked for Director Peter Berg on the films Hancock and Battleship. In 2010, Ms. Dilley joined the team at Route One and helped oversee A Walk in the Woods and Equals.

     

    In 2014, Ms. Dilley joined Not Impossible Labs and The Ebeling Group as a Producer and Head of Production. Ms. Dilley was tasked with producing commercials and documentaries illustrating the application of original, high tech solutions to serious real world problems. Ms. Dilley’s first short form content debut, “Don’s Voice,” attained over 1 million views in 2 weeks and 1 billion media impressions; won three Telly Awards and three One Show Pencils; and was shortlisted for the AICP awards. She also accepted the SXSW Innovative 3-DIY Interactive Award for “Project Daniel” along with Mick Ebeling and Elliot Kotek.

     

    In May 2015, Ms. Dilley returned to Route One Entertainment as the Director of Development and Production, where she focuses on evaluating film, TV and digital interactive opportunities. She also acts as a production executive on ROE film projects.

     

    Ms. Dilley has two Bachelor’s degrees from Loyola Marymount University, one in Film Production and another in Political Science. She also has a Master’s degree in Project Management specializing in International Marketing and Film from Boston University.
